Olivia Rodrigo Debuts New Song on “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” (Watch)

(Warning: Spoilers ahead if you aren’t caught up with season two of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series!)

Are you guys ready for this? A new Olivia Rodrigo song just dropped!

The pop singer wrote and recorded a song titled, “The Rose Song,” for the sixth episode of the second season of her show, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

In the episode titled “Yes, And,” Nini (Rodrigo) gets casted as the rose in East High’s theatrical production of Beauty and the Beast. She is assigned the task of writing an original song that she and her boyfriend, Ricky (played by Joshua Bassett), will perform during the musical. Throughout the episode, she struggles finding the words to write the song. She also has a few troubling conversations with Ricky in between her writing process.

After a pep talk from her best friend, Kourtney (played by Dara Reneé), Nini finishes the song and plays it for Kourtney through the phone as a voicemail. She says it became easier to write once she started writing it from the rose’s point of view as opposed to the Beast’s.

Some of the lyrics include, “I am more than what I am to you. You say I’m perfect, but I’ve got thorns with my petals too. And I won’t be confined to your point of view. I’m breaking through the glass you put me in cause my beauty’s from within.”

In an interview with USA Today, the singer talked about her experience with writing “The Rose Song.” She said she wrote the song within twenty minutes of hearing the concept for it. She called it a “magical experience” that “was meant to be.”

On Nini’s writer’s block, she said, “Lots of times I have that experience with songwriting just like Nini, where you’re trying to make something, trying to write about something that you’re not actually feeling. The second that you’re like, “Oh, let me just write about my real life,” it becomes so much easier. It becomes therapeutic and the song becomes more meaningful. I’ve had that experience in my life and in my songwriting so it was cool to portray that on TV.”

The “deja vu” singer just reached a milestone by being the top artist on the Rolling Stone Artists 500 Chart for the third week in a row. You can read about it here.

Episodes of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series drop every Friday on Disney+.
