Onoleigh Shares How Her ‘Shattering Breakup’ Inspired Her Sassy New Single “OK Later” (Exclusive)

Onoleigh is getting revenge on her ex who broke her heart.

The budding country songstress dropped her brand new anthem “OK Later” earlier this month (November 1) and it’s one for the all the girls who reclaim their power after a breakup.

Co-written by GRAMMY-nominated Emile Ghantous, along with Emmy Award-winning Josh Goode and 4x Platinum songwriter Sam SZND, “Ok Later” showcases Onoleigh‘s haunting powerhouse vocals, promising talent and bold personality.  Inspired by her “shattering breakup” with her former military beau, the singer/songwriter tells Celeb Secrets that the song resembles the concept of Miranda Lambert‘s smash hit “Mama’s Broken Heart,” where she will be “Ok Later,” but will let her feelings happen first.

“This song came from a huge betrayal. I was dating a man in the Navy and he did me dirty. He ended up cheating on me the whole seven months he was deployed. I was so loyal and loving while he was away and my heart was shattered,” Onoleigh tells Celeb Secrets about the song’s inspiration in an exclusive interview. “I feel like pain demands to be felt and sometimes when you bottle it up, it actually makes it worse. So I was like, ‘let me feel my feelings and I will be ok later.'”

“It was so intense, but I’m very much worked through it now. Thankfully, the song and a lot of the music that I’ve been writing has helped me heal in a sense,” she continues.

Admitting that she doesn’t really write vengeance songs, Onoleigh knew that she had to put something out like “Ok Later” not only to help her heal, but also for other girls who unfortunately have gone through similar experiences.

With a storyline that boldly declares that she’ll be strutting into that hotel bar looking better than ever if her ex is out drinking with other girls, the edgy country tune is truly a rallying cry for anyone who’s ever felt the string of betrayal — and ready to show their ex what they’re missing.

“Whenever you’re going through things that are extremely hard, I think it’s easy to tell yourself that you’re just going to keep it together. However, I think by me having a couple months where I was just not myself, my closest people saw it as a cry for help and supported me through it. So if you need to just be alone and sit with the hurt, I think you’ll actually move through it a lot quicker,” Onoleigh says of the song’s message.

While she’s taking time off for the holidays, Onoleigh will perform at Whiskey Jam next Monday, December 9th, marking her first time on the same stage that some of country music’s biggest artists had their start.

She also promises more music at the top of the new year, with a debut EP dropping in the spring 2025. As to what the vibes are for the upcoming material, the Nashville-based artist says she’s in her “transparent era,” where she’s set to reflect on her past experiences and become empowered from it.

“I’m not sugarcoating anything. I finally have a trajectory on what I want to say and how I want to say it, and we’re going to hopefully keep on cooking from there,” Onoleigh reveals.

“I think this is the first time in my life where I kind of flipped the script and am transforming this shame into confidence. I know what I want, I know what I deserve, and bare minimum is not enough. Hopefully this this will move into a sweeter, soft girl era where we meet the man and the music becomes happy again, but I think this is just as important truly to kind of show the real emotions,” she concludes.
