Phillies’ Rhys Hoskins Carted Off Field With Injury

Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins was carted off the field after suffering a non-contact injury during his team’s 4-1 win over the Tigers on Thursday, March 23.

In what seemed to be a routine two-hopper, Hoskins backpedaled to field the ball to his forehand before collapsing on the outfield grass, clutching at his left knee. The game was stopped for about 10 minutes as Hoskins was tended to by Phillies trainers and ballpark EMTs while being circled by teammates.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson had no update on Hoskins after the game as the team is still awaiting test results, but did say on the broadcast that Hoskins was walking around in the clubhouse after the injury. Hoskins had surgery over the offseason to repair the meniscus in his right knee, an injury he played through during last year’s playoffs.

The loss of Hoskins would be a big one for the Phillies. Their first baseman came into his own last season, hitting .246 with 30 home runs (plus six more in the playoffs), 79 RBIs and a team-leading 33 doubles. With star outfielder Bryce Harper‘s return from Tommy John surgery uncertain, Hoskins production at the plate is needed if Philadelphia wants to reach the World Series for the second year in a row.

Entering his seventh year with the Phillies, Hoskins is set to be a free agent after this season. Since his debut in 2017, the 30-year-old righty ranks 12th in the MLB in home runs (148) and 16th in RBIs (405).
