P!nk Offers to Pay Norwegian Women’s Beach Handball Team Dresscode Fine

P!nk, is showing her support for the Norwegian Women’s Beach Handball Team in hopes of promoting gender equality in the sport which is likely to debut in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Just last week, the Norwegians were fined for refusing to wear bikini bottoms during the European Beach Handball Championship. In protest of the revealing uniforms, the women wore elastic shorts, just like their male counterparts.

The protest was followed by a fine worth 1,500 euros ($1,770) at the championship for what the European Handball Federation called “a breach of clothing regulations.”

Over the weekend, P!nk tweeted in support of the women for protesting the very sexist rules about their “uniform.”

“The European handball federation SHOULD BE FINED FOR SEXISM,” she tweeted. She even added that she’d be “happy to pay your fines for you. Keep it up.”

The response from P!nk has led to a public uproar against the sexualization of women athletes by the International Handball Federation. According to their guidelines, men’s shorts cannot be too baggy and must be 10 centimeters above the knee. However, it is mandatory that women wear bikini bottoms with a maximum side width of 10 centimeters and “a closed fit and cut on an upward angle toward the top of the leg.”

The women of the Norwegian Handball Federation took to Instagram to express gratitude for all the support they received from P!nk and fans online, writing, “Wow! Thank you so much for the support. We really appreciate all the love we have received.”

European Handball Federation President, Michael Wiederer made a statement saying “The EHF acknowledges the position of the players involved and further steps towards change, in close coordination with the International Handball Federation, have been and are in motion.”
