Q&A: Karina Rae Talks Finding Her New Sound, “Bitch Boy,” And More

After taking a couple of years to hone in on her craft, pop recording artist and songwriter Karina Rae is debuting her new mature and edgy sound with her latest single “Bitch Boy.”

The fun single calls out some past lovers in Karina’s life in a playful way. Karina Rae is showcasing a new pop/rock vibe and we are loving it. The infectious record will get you up and moving and reminds you to not put up with anyone or anything that is not deserving of your time.

“‘Bitch Boy’ was inspired by influencer culture in general, after a specific guy talked down on me, I was pretty much over it,” Karina tells us. “I wrote the song with two friends on a beach in Malibu, so it’s pretty cool to listen to what it is now.”

We caught up with Karina to discuss her new sound and talk all about “Bitch Boy.” Listen to the song and read our full Q&A below and don’t forget to let us know what you think of “Bitch Boy” by either leaving a reaction at the bottom of the post or by sending us a tweet at @celebsecrets

Celeb Secrets: Congratulations on the new release! Can you tell us about what inspired the song and what the writing process was like?

Karina Rae: “Thank you! During my two and a half years in LA so far, I’ve encountered a lot of new people and definitely expanded my dating experience. I’ve come across a few new types of people, some being the kind that genuinely think 500k followers on instagram makes them a superior human being. It’s not unheard of, but definitely hard for me to wrap my brain around when I first meet them. Anyway, I started talking to this guy who was in the same realm. It became pretty obvious pretty quickly that their ‘image’ was far more important than being a decent person, and therefore treated me as if I was some sort of inferior, talking to me almost childlike. That was kind of my last straw with these kind of people, so I just decided to write about it because how else would I express my feelings? “

CS: The song is sonically different from your past releases. How did you discover this new evolved sound and is that what the rest of your new music will sound like?

KR: “I’ve been on a LONG journey of not only discovering myself as an artist, but as a person as well. After taking a hiatus for the past two years, I was able to realize that I have always naturally gravitated toward a more Pop/Rock/Indie sound. This has shown in the music that’s been created post Bitch Boy, so I’m pretty excited to see where this new era takes me, because it’s the most me I’ve really ever felt as a creative.”

CS: How has your creative process changed during quarantine? Do you have any advice on how to stay motivated during this time?

KR: “I’m actively working on music again, which hasn’t happened in a few years. The process has been different depending on who I’m collaborating with, but overall it’s been the most fun I’ve had while creating music. Quarantine definitely had me doing everything I could to find motivation and inspiration, so even if I had to reflect back on past events, I found a way to write about something. We can only control how we react to what’s happening around us, so why put anymore pressure on ourselves? This whole state of society we’re in right now is already stressful enough, so just do what you can.”

CS: What else can we expect from Karina Rae in 2021?

KR: “Expect a lot of music and expression. I already have releases that I’m planning for the spring. I’m really excited to see how everything unfolds and how everyone reacts to it.”

CS: Lastly, we are Celeb Secrets; Can you share a secret or fun fact about your latest single?

KR: “‘Bitch Boy’ was inspired by influencer culture in general, after a specific guy talked down on me, I was pretty much over it. I wrote the song with two friends on a beach in Malibu, so it’s pretty cool to listen to what it is now.”
