West Side Story is heading to the Oscars… but not Rachel Zegler.
Like many celebrities during award season, Zegler’s Instagram comments have been flooded with fans sending their love for the actress’s style. One user took the chance to share how excited they were to see Zegler’s Oscars outfit, but to many fans’ disappointment the star answered with bad news.
The 20-year-old actress who plays the lead role of Maria in the Steven Spielberg reimagining of West Side Story, revealed that she will not be attending this year’s Oscars because she was never invited.

“I’m not invited so sweatpants and my boyfriend’s flannel,” Zegler wrote. “idk y’all i have tried it all but it doesn’t seem to be happening :’) I will root for west side story from my couch and be proud of the work we so tirelessly did 3 years ago. I hope some last minute miracle occurs and I can celebrate our film in person but hey, that’s how it goes sometimes, I guess. Thanks for all the shock and outrage— I’m disappointed, too. but that’s okay. so proud of our movie. ❤️”
After receiving multiple comments and messages from fans sharing their disappointment with the Academy Awards for not inviting the actress despite West Side Story being nominated for seven categories, Zegler took the chance to clear up the air and also thank fans for all their support.
“My goodness, folks!! appreciate all the support, I really really do,” the Snow White actress tweeted. “We live in such unprecedented times, and a lot of work behind the scenes goes into making movie magic happen. that goes for film productions (like the one I am so lucky to be currently shooting in london)…and awards shows alike. let’s all just respect the process and I’ll get off my phone XR.”

Despite all the drama, Zegler said she will definitely watch The 2022 Oscars in support of her fellow cast and crew. The 94th annual Academy Awards air on ABC Sunday, March 27, at 8 p.m. EST.
