Red Gerard Talks Defending His Gold Medal in Men’s Snowboard Slopestyle with a Dreamlike Run at X Games Aspen 2025 (Exclusive)

Red Gerard has done it again!

The 24-year-old snowboard phenom from Silverthorne, Colorado, successfully defended his gold medal in the Men’s Snowboard Slopestyle competition at X Games Aspen 2025 on Saturday (January 25), cementing his legacy as one of the most consistent riders in the sport.

With 10 of the world’s best riders battling it out on a slopestyle course that demanded both technical precision and creativity, Gerard delivered when it mattered most. His final run featured a jaw-dropping switch backside triple cork 1620 mute, locking in his second consecutive X Games gold and his third overall X Games medal.

Still buzzing from his victory, Gerard admitted that the moment felt surreal.

“Crazy. I’m honestly in disbelief that I was able to go back-to-back,” he told Celeb Secrets host Juliet Schroder after his win. “It was one of those things, I was sitting down there after I landed, and I was like, I swear I have woken up before from this. This has been a dream.”

But the road to gold wasn’t without its challenges. The new playoff-style format added an extra layer of pressure, especially during the preliminary rounds.

“You know, every contest where we have a qualifier going into finals, qualifiers are the hardest part. It’s just super stressful. You want to make it to the finals, but you’re going up against, you know, at times 30 to 60 other riders,” Gerard explained. “Once you get through that qualifying process, you feel free. And that’s kind of how it felt out here today.”

While some riders go into competitions with a meticulously planned run, Gerard keeps things more fluid.

“I just went to the offseason camps and really just tried to get more and more consistent with my tricks,” he said. “But yeah, there wasn’t really a ton of game plan, honestly. That’s how I feel like I do best.”

His laid-back approach clearly worked, as he bested a stacked field that included snowboarding legend Mark McMorris, who took silver.

“It’s good, I mean, I honestly always—he just continues to amaze me year after year after year that he’s able to show up and do these tricks every time and, you know, be battling for first,” Gerard said about McMorris. “It was awesome. Yeah, we have a great relationship and I freaking love coming here and riding with him.”

With another X Games gold in the bag, Gerard is keeping the good times rolling in Aspen for a little while longer.

“I’ll stick around here in Aspen for another like seven to ten days,” he shared. “We have one more contest after this and then, I don’t know, go from there, see where we’re heading.”

As for any pre-contest rituals?

“Honestly, not really,” he admitted. “I’m pretty casual with it. I just try to feel as good as I can on my snowboard.”

For a guy who makes snowboarding look effortless, that strategy seems to be working just fine. And with his momentum only building, it’s safe to say this won’t be the last time we see Red Gerard atop the podium.
