Ruelle Refects on Her Personal Growth Within Her Marriage with Interpretive Music Video for New Single “Self Sabotage” (Premiere)

After racking in over 500,000,000 streams on Spotify thanks to a sync licensing catalogue, Ruelle has proven that she’s a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.

The Nashville-based pop artist can be heard on your TV literally every night, as she’s got her hands in major ad campaigns with brands like Apple, Microsoft, Google and Ralph Lauren on major networks like Netflix, Hulu, HBO and BBC.

After many collaborations, Ruelle dropped a five-song EP titled Somebody Else in September, which she says is a shift in both sound and perspective. Written by Ruelle along with Tofer Brown (Cher Lloyd, Lady A), Daniella Mason (Nick Jonas), and Robert Marvin (Tove Lo, Adam Lambert), the new material finds the superstar-in-the-making opening up about her personal life for the first time, including intimate topics like marriage, friends, family and navigating the music industry in present day.

Today (November 28), Ruelle reveals exclusively with Celeb Secrets that her song “Self Sabotage” is the latest single off the project, which — according to the singer/songwriter — sheds a bit of light on what was a darker but beautiful season of her life.

“‘Self Sabotage’ is very meaningful to me, as it is a deep reflection of personal growth within my marriage,” Ruelle tells Celeb Secrets in an exclusive statement. “When I first met my husband, I had been deeply hurt in a previous relationship and would often knowingly try to push him away in an attempt to protect myself. Seeing him fight for me and for ‘us’ was a very healing experience and ultimately allowed me to come to a place where I could receive love again.”

“The song definitely sheds a bit of light on what was a darker but beautiful season of my life — one that I’m very grateful to have walked through and one that has made me a stronger person today,” she concludes.

In addition to announcing “Self Sabotage” as the new single, Ruelle shared a sneak peek at the accompanying visual with Celeb Secrets, which perfectly encapsulates the beautiful love story through interpretive contemporary dancing led by longtime friend and renowned choreographer Dee Caspary (Dancing With the Stars, Justin Timberlake’s Future Sex/Love Sounds Show).

“I know that usually the artist is the star of most music videos, but I really wanted to showcase a different kind of story telling with this songs,” Ruelle says. “Dance has always been very linked to my music in general, and I wanted that raw emotion and intimacy that sometimes only dance can bring. I knew we needed to bring in my friend [Dee] to choreograph it — so when he said year — we were beyond thrilled.”

“My favorite memory was probably watching the dancers move through the entire choreography in the house for the first time… I had chills,” she added.

Captured in a single frame, Ruelle shares that the reasoning behind putting together the meticulous visual was to make sure that the song’s realness was needed to see its true meaning.

“Most viewers may not know how difficult it is to film an entire music video in one single shot, but we were able to pull it off,” she shares. “It’s extremely technical, and it can be difficult to capture the emotion and precision all the way through. There’s a realness that comes through in the moment that simply can’t be captured in the same way when you’re trying to piece it all together after filming, so we felt it as special and needed to be released as its own version.”

As for what’s next, Ruelle says that she’s been hard at work in the studio honing in on her craft for  new material in 2023.

“I will definitely have new music coming out in 2023,” she says, “but for now, I’m just enjoying the writing process. I love the beginning stages of forming a project, and I’m just excited to see what it turns into.”
