Life in plastic, it’s fantastic! Margot Robbie has finally found her Ken in Ryan Gosling for the upcoming film Barbie based on the iconic Mattel dolls.
The two-time Oscar nominee is in final negotiations to play Ken in Warner Bros’ upcoming movie about Barbie doll. According to Deadline, at first, Gosling turned down the role due to a busy schedule but because pre-production was postponed due to the pandemic, the actor was able to join the project.
Robbie also does double duty for this movie. In addition to starring as the fashionable Barbie doll, she’s also producing the film under her LuckyChap Entertainment company. Producers on Barbie also include LuckyChap’s Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara, Mattel’s Robbie Brenner, Ynon Kreiz and David Heyman.
Plot details have yet to be revealed, and there is no information on whether other characters from the Mattel series of toys will appear in the film. However, fans expect this to be a very fresh take on the doll’s history considering that Greta Gerwig will direct the movie.
Gerwig’s film, Lady Bird, was nominated for an Oscar for the Best Director, while Little Women received five Oscar nominations and an Academy Award for the Best Costumes. Gerwig signed a contract with Warner Bros. back in 2019 and will be writing the script for Barbie with her partner, screenwriter Noah Baumbach.
Production of the film is scheduled to start in early 2022 at WB’s Leavesden Studios in London with the premiere scheduled for 2023.
