Solange Knowles was honored as one of Glamour’s Women of the Year at the annual event last night (November 13) in New York City and it was definitely a moment to remember.
Introduced by prolific writer and one of Solange’s personal heroes Claudia Rankine, Knowles’ speech combined sentiments of power, humility, and gratitude. She delivered her message with a combination of humor and an earnest declaration of one’s right to choose how they are perceived by the world.
“My journey has been a rise and fall. It’s been ugly, it’s been loud, it’s been disruptive, it’s been long. It’s often been painful, but, it’s been free. It’s been beautiful, and it’s been mine,” Knowles said in her acceptance speech.
“This past year has been one of the most rewarding and wonderful moments of my life. I was able to turn my pain and my trauma and my rage into work and into my art. And I have been filled with a gratitude so abundant that I can’t even express it in words how thankful I am. I’m eternally grateful and I will never, ever take for granted for the way that people have uplifted me, and for my voice and my work.”
