Taylor Swift is treating her fans in honor of the one-year anniversary of her eighth studio album, Folklore. On Saturday (July 24), the singer released the original version of the bonus track, “The Lakes.”
Swift took to social media to share two new photos along with a note for the fans regarding the Anniversary. She said, “It’s been 1 year since we escaped the real world together and imagined ourselves someplace simpler. With tall trees & salt air. Where you can wear lace nightgowns that make you look like a Victorian ghost & no one will side eye you cause no one is around.”
She continued, “To say thank you for all you have done to make this album what it was, I wanted to give you the original version of The Lakes. Happy 1 year anniversary to Rebekah, Betty, Inez, James, Augustine and the stories we all created around them. Happy Anniversary, folklore. 🌿”

On Tuesday (July 20), Jack Antonoff, Swift’s longtime collaborator, gave an interview to Billboard in which he talked about the aforementioned version of “The Lakes.” Antonoff said that there was a “big orchestral version” of the song, but Swift opted out of using it on the album. After hearing it, she said, “Eh, make it small.”
Antonoff said, “I had gotten lost in the string arrangements and all this stuff, and I took everything out. I was just like, “Oh, my God!” We were not together because that record was made [remotely], but I remember being in the studio alone like, “Holy s***, this is so perfect.” Fans ultimately concluded that this tidbit of information was indeed one of Swift’s renowned Easter eggs!
Taylor Swift telling Jack to mention the story about The Lakes original version in HIS interview so it can be an Easter Egg for her surprise drop is so Taylor Swift thing to do.
