Q&A: EMME Dishes on the Meaning Behind Her Pop Hit “Late Bloomer”

Celeb Secrets recently had the chance to catch up with pop recording artist and songwriter EMME, who you may know from her collaborations with artists like Le Youth, iamnotshane, Lincoln Jesser, and more.

Most recently, EMME released another single from her solo project titled “Late Bloomer” and we cannot get enough of it. The song details EMME’s struggle with pursing her artist project “late” in her own mind, and how it is important to rid yourself of that mindset and realize it is never truly too late to follow your passions. “Late Bloomer” is a testament to EMME’s artistic prowess, showcasing her ability to craft captivating narratives through music.

Somehow, EMME is able to capture all of these complex emotions in a catchy and soul-stirring anthem that you will be singing for days. Check out our interview below and be sure to check out “Late Bloomer” on all streaming platforms.

Celeb Secrets: Congratulations on the release of Late Bloomer! We love the vibe and message of this song. What inspired you to write this song and how do you hope listeners resonate to it when they hear it?

EMME: “This song was born out of my ‘late’ decision to pursue my own artist project, after years of being only a songwriter for others. I felt afraid in a lot of ways to step outside of what I’d known and even felt jealous of friends that seemed to have it all figured out. And it wasn’t until I decided to release my own music and share my voice that I felt like I was really stepping into who I really am. So I hope listeners can be reminded that it’s never too late to go after the life they’ve always wanted.”

CS: Feeling like a “late bloomer” is such a common thing for so many, yet not many people talk about it. Why do you think that is and was it challenging to put these feelings into a song, or was it therapeutic?

E: “I found writing about it to be incredibly therapeutic. This song really acts as a reminder to myself to keep going when I feel stuck comparing myself to what other people have or feeling like it’s too late to even try. I think many people believe that they’re failing if they haven’t hit certain goals by a certain age. So many incredible people, though like Morgan Freeman, Julia Child, and Vera Wang, were all late bloomers in their careers.”

CS: You also recently had a song come out with iamnotshane. How has it been seeing the positive reception to that song?

E: “It’s been amazing! I have toured with Shane in the past as his background vocalist, so to be able to put out a song with him as a featured artist feels like a huge milestone. Not to mention our song was also placed on some big Spotify playlists like ‘New Music Friday US,’ ‘Chill Pop,’ and ‘soda,’ which were all a first for me as an artist. And I’ve received countless sweet messages from Shane’s fans that I’ve met over the years who are now becoming fans of my own music, which feels incredible.”

CS: What do you think is the main difference when you are writing and collaborating with other artists versus for your artist project? How do you balance the two?

E: “I think the main difference is that when I’m writing for another artist, I’m solely focused on their voice, their brand, and their story. I tend to remove my own experiences from the writing process and do everything I can to bring out the song they’re wanting to write. I absolutely love writing for others because we all have unique perspectives and talents to share. But I feel most empowered when I’m the artist in the room and am able to create in my most authentic way. So I really do try to find a balance between sessions for myself and others to stay creatively fulfilled.”

CS: What else can fans expect from EMME in 2024?

E: “My next single ‘High Dive’ will be coming this April, followed by my EP ‘All That I Know’ this May. I also already have a bunch of new music that will be coming later this year as well, so there is a lot to be looking out for.”
