It wasn’t a shocker to many when Athing Mu took home gold in the Women’s 800m Final yesterday (August 3). With a time of 1 minute and 55.21 seconds, Mu won the first USA 800m gold in 53 years. She is the second American woman to win the event, after Madeline Manning in 1968.
We knew the teenager was destined for greatness after placing first at the US Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon back in June. Since then, Mu has been training consistently and keeping her mind at ease.
“I came in very relaxed, my mind was very chill. I wasn’t nervous or anything, I was just ready to go, ready to do what I had to do to get on that medal stand,” Mu said.
She wasn’t the only American girl standing on the 800m podium. Raevyn Rogers may have pulled off one of the greatest finesses in track history. With almost 75 meters to go, The Houston native raced her way from seventh place, all the way to third, securing a bronze medal.
