The Cast of ‘Everything I Know About Love’ Shares Their Advice For Your 20’s as The Show Makes its US Debut (Exclusive)

Ah, the joys of being in your 20’s. It’s an interesting time where you’ve got one foot in adulthood and the other foot still holding on to being a kid –  as Peacock would call it, you’re “flourishing, failing and figuring it out” when describing their new series Everything I Know About Love

“Our show has got a lot of the stupid stuff you do when you’re just hanging out with your mates 24/7…” Marli Siu, who plays Nell, said. “There’s a lot of humor in it and a lot of heart in it and it’s a lot of just terrible flats and bad landlords and it’s all very relatable and quite enjoyable to watch.”

This isn’t the first time Everything I Know About Love has hit television screens. It was first released in the UK on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in early June and was brought to the United States today (August 25) thanks to NBC’s streaming platform Peacock.

“I’m really really curious to see what the kind of American response to this very British, London centric show [will be],” Aliyah Odoffin told Celeb Secrets reporter Blakely McHugh about the release of the series.

The comedy drama series is based off of the 2018 best-selling memoir, Everything I Know About Love, by British author Dolly Alderton. It follows four girls, Maggie (Emma Appleton “Pistol”),  Birdy (Bel Powley “The Morning Show”), Amara (Aliyah Odoffin) and Nell (Marli Siu “Alex Rider”), as they navigate jobs, relationships, friendships, family and love.

“I think what Dolly has done is created really relatable characters and she’s so good at just universal human emotions,” lead actress Emma Appleton said.

Don’t get confused though, the central love story is actually between two best friends, Maggie and Birdy.

“[The show is] not just focused on love but it kind of shows you all the different scenarios where love is kind of at risk with the situations like within friendships, within work, within things that you love,” Odoffin shared. It’s like where love kind of invites itself into different aspects of your life and those things I feel like everybody at any stage can kind of relate to.”

Appleton plays Maggie, a young woman who is eccentric, outgoing, lives life on the edge and also financially unstable. She’s constantly trying to make ends meet hoping that her “big break” will come in the form of something that happens like out of a movie.

While everyone else around her is telling her that won’t happen and she needs to get a job in a more conventional route.

Maggie puts her trust in the universe though, knowing (OK maybe hoping) that it will work out the way she wants it to.

That’s one thing Appleton wishes she did in her real life when she was in her 20’s.

“I turned 30 last year and I was like why didn’t I just trust my gut instinct more? I kind of never trusted myself properly and now I’m thirty and I’m like, ‘your gut is always right.’ You’ve got to have more confidence in yourself.”

As for Siu, she advises anyone in their 20’s to “breathe a little more” and “have a little bit more fun.”

“I feel like 20s are like hustle, you just have to try and figure out the rest of your life in this little short period of time and then I feel like you get to the end of your 20s and you’re like ‘oh okay, it’s going to be okay,” the actress said.

Meanwhile, their co-star Odoffin, is taking notes considering she’s just at the beginning stages of her 20s. Her goal in the next period of her life is trust her gut, be true to herself and believe in who she is a person.

“There’s probably many a lessons that I haven’t learned yet that I’m gonna learn soon. I’ll come back to you and be like, it was this!” she said.
