Freeform’s The Fosters never shies away from tackling the tough topics and the Season 4 premiere will be no different. In both the first and second episode of the new season, the characters will face the traumatic events surrounding a school shooting.
This episode will be airing just one week after a mass shooting at an Orlando gay nightclub, in which 49 people were killed.
The cast and crew are very aware of the timeliness of this episode and will not let the events from last week go ignored. Fosters stars Cierra Ramirez and Sherri Saum will address the situation by delivering a special message dedicated to the victims of the Orlando shooting before the episode airs.
“It’s something that’s happening so much it’s almost becoming normal,” executive producer Joanna Johnson told TVGuide.com. “It almost seems like a weekly occurrence that someone is taking a gun to school. We wanted to explore what the impact of this has on our schools and has on our kids.”
The season summer premiere will pick up right where the season three cliffhanger left off — with Callie admitting her past relationship with Brandon to her moms. However, before Stef and Lena can even process the information, the school goes into a “Code Blue” lockdown when it’s discovered Mariana’s boyfriend Nick showed up with his father’s gun after seeing her kiss her ex-boyfriend Mat.
“Potential Energy” airs Monday, June 20 at 8:00pm ET on Freeform.
