“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” Returns with Live Tapings Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

The Ed Sullivan Theater has reopened its doors for the first time in fifteen months as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert show is back and in front of a live studio audience!

With a standing ovation that lasted 90 seconds with a full crowd chanting “Stephen, Stephen Stephen,” this iconic late-night talk show had fans more than pleased as Colbert made his grand entry to begin the episode.

“So how ya been?” Colbert yelled to a crowd of 420 vaccinated New Yorkers. With masks barely in sight, the audience responded with a roar of laughter that made us feel like we were back in 2019.

For the last fifteen months, Colbert taped 213 episodes without a live studio audience and conducted most of his celebrity interviews with guests over Zoom. Last week, the TV host shared his excitement for the return of live shows in a statement, saying “I’m like a dog who’s got his head out the window and can smell that we’re near the farm. I’m ready to be out of the cage.”

The return of a fully-packed studio gives us clarity that we are seeing light at the end of the Coronavirus tunnel and that New York City is slowly making its return to normalcy.
