Tubi’s Original Music Drama “Howard High” Gives You the High School Musical Fix You Need While Raising Awareness to Real-Life Issues (Exclusive)

If you were a fan of the High School Musical and Bring It On movies from back in the day, then stop what you’re doing right now and head to Tubi to watch their new film Howard High.

Now available to stream for free, the all-new original music drama follows a high school musical group that must compete against a rival school in order to save their arts program, while also battling issues from the inside. Directed by Christopher B. Stokes, the cast is stacked with standout talent including Chrissy Stokes (“Southland”), Anthony Lewis (“Madea’s Farewell Play”), Earanequa Carter, Lindsay Davis, Veronika Bozeman (“Karen”), Jarell Houston (“You Got Served”), Christian Gonzalez and Kida Burns (“Battlefield America”), as well as Keith Sweat, Marques Houston, Ross Fleming, Hannah Malone, Deonte Jackson, Rayan Lopez, Diany Arias, Asha Franklin and Lindsay Diann.

“This movie really shows that whenever your back is against the wall… whenever you sometimes don’t know how to make ends meet, you go and chase your dream. And whatever that is to get the job done, you get it done,” Kida Burns, who plays Treyvon Johnson in the film, tells Celeb Secrets host Juliet Schroder in an exclusive interview. “It’s really dope because this can also correlate into real life. We’re just kids in the school and we’ve got this gift. We can rap, we can sing… and the school is about to get shut down. We take it upon ourselves to get it back by going against the rivals. The message is that no matter who or what gets in your way, you block out the noise and just go attack.”

The film is apart of the streaming platform’s initiative for Black History Month, where they are housing 1,400 Black Cinema titles to watch on demand, including the award-winning documentary I Am Not Your Negro; Sorry to Bother You, starring LaKeith Stanfield; Bessie, featuring Queen Latifah, Michael K. Williams, Mo’Nique and more; The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks; and The Jacksons: An American Dream; as well as Tubi Originals Twisted House Sitter, Most Wanted Santa and Girls Getaway Gone Wrong.

“It feels incredible that [Howard High] is apart of this [initiative],” Anthony Lewis, who plays Devin, said, with Chrissy, who plays Nicki, adding with excitement, “We get to represent our melanin squad!”

Celeb Secrets sat down with Chrissy, Anthony and Kida to learn more about Howard High, their favorite memories from filming, and bringing together their passions — music, dancing and acting — all into one project.
