Baga Chipz, Blu Hydrangea, and Divina de Campo got together on the first season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, where they wowed the world with their striking dance skills and sickening songwriting. The three paired up as part of the main episode challenge, where they were tasked to write, choreograph and record a hit single with the help of songwriter MNEK, where they came up with their own verses for their version of “Break Up (Bye Bye),” marking the genesis of a long-term career filled worldwide success.

“We were the leftovers,” Divina told Celeb Secrets about the experience. “I’m such an anxious little creature. These two put me completely at ease, right from the word ‘go’. Blu came up with a name, Baga is so chill, and was just like a perfect meeting of minds for me. It was a joy from start to finish.”

I think that’s what we were seen as, was like slight underdogs in that kinda challenge,” Blu Hydrangea added. “We prevailed, and I think that was the best part of the challenge.”

After the episode went live, the song reached number 1 on iTunes UK, number 35 on the UK Singles Chart, number 44 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart in the US, as well as amassing 7.6 million streams on Spotify.

“I just felt like a pop star,” Baga shared. “Having things charting and stuff. And it’s really good music as well, you know what I mean? It’s not like we’re just singing about our eyelashes and wigs and stuff. It’s just proper, like, oh my God, this is actually a bop!” And we couldn’t agree more.

“It was really surreal,” Divina remarked. “You’ve spent all of this time working already, and then suddenly, ba! There it is. Suddenly it happens.”

And while the queens reminisce on their success, Blu lets us know it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows.

“I remember it was the week my nanny died. And I remember being in this awkward… You know, when everyone’s surrounding you mourning, and then finding out that it was in the chart.” Blu told us. “And being so excited, watching it climb, but like, I can’t be happy in this room, but I am a little bit.”

Following the end of the season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, the Frock Destroyers continued to work together on their music endeavors. In addition to releasing their own album, FROCK4LIFEthe girls teamed up with singer-songwriter Brett Leland McLaughlin, professionally known as Leland. In addition to writing songs with Selena Gomez, Troye Sivan, Daya, Andy Grammer, Kelsea Ballerini and Allie X, Leland has composed music for a variety of TV shows and films including Sierra Burgess Is A Loser, Love,Victor, Boy Erasedand of course, RuPaul’s Drag Race.

“[Leland] — who’s just so brilliant to work with — goes away, kind of mulls over what we said, and then comes back with something. We write some lyrics, some other ideas, we might push things this way or that way.” Divina shared about working with the writer. “It’s a real collaborative process, and he’s really open to hearing other people’s ideas and stuff like that, and implementing them as well.”

I mean, I know that we are probably a step up from Selena.” Blu joked when asked about writing with such an established name in the music industry. “Like we’re all in a room together, let’s be honest- He’d wanna be talking to us instead of Selena. It’s amazing, cause, to be honest, it almost feels like we’re doing charity. No, I’m just kidding! No, we love it. We love it.”

On November 25th, the Frock Destroyers released their first-ever holiday hit, “Naughty List,” sharing with Celeb Secrets that they are READY to jingle some balls under the Christmas tree this year.

“It was really great [experience], we had fun writing it,” Divina said.

“Leland is such a fun person to be with and I can understand why he’s so successful at what he does, because he just knows you might be feeling a little bit self-conscious about something, and he just pulls out what he can from you and it’s always the best.” Blu continued. “And we were recording with someone, his best friend today, instead of him because he’s in the states and we are over in the UK. And his best friend just did the exact same thing, and he told his friend, ‘You’re gonna have so many laughs working with these girls.’ And you know what, that’s exactly what we do. And I think that’s what makes it such a great experience.”

Leland’s always said, he’s a full Frock Destroyer. And we wouldn’t go anywhere else. We’re always with Leland.” Baga chimed in. “If we ever won an award, it would be dedicated to Leland. He is the maestro of the band.”

And as for the behind-the-scenes secrets for the Frock Destroyers?

“The biggest secret is that we all get on. There’s never any drama. They’re staying at my house at the moment.” Baga shared.

“And we’re the only Drag Race UK girl band that are still together and working. Maybe that’s shady actually. If that’s too shady, then Baga said it.” Blu, I mean, Baga, added.
