In December 2021, the Jacksonville Jaguars fired their head coach, Urban Meyer. Plagued with a plethora of controversies, including a viral video in October which saw Meyer dancing and flirting with college students at a bar, it was inconceivable that the fallout could get any worse.
That is, until last night, when a bombshell report by The Athletic was published. In it, details of Meyer’s coaching style were revealed, including routinely insulting and intimidating players and staff, failing to know big-name athletes in the league, and maintaining an overall arrogant attitude.
“During a meeting that also included members of the coaching and personnel staffs, Meyer berated a player so harshly that the player cried,” the article stated. “According to two sources, Meyer slammed the door after departing the meeting, leaving others to console the player. The next day, one of the other staff members present confronted Meyer about the incident in what one source described as a tense exchange.”

Meyer also repeatedly threatened his players, saying that they would not succeed outside of the league if Meyer cut them from the team. “And do you know what would happen if I cut you guys?” Meyer said, according to four people in the room. “You couldn’t get a job paying more than $15 an hour.”
Meyer was reportedly unfamiliar with stars around the league. These included Jamal Adams of the Seahawks, and Aaron Donald of the Rams. “Who’s this 99 guy on the Rams?” Meyer asked one staffer during the season, according to a source. “I’m hearing he might be a problem for us.”
A veteran member of the football staff told The Athletic in the report that Meyer’s reign was “[the] most toxic environment [he’s] ever been a part of. By far. Not even close.” Following the firing of Meyer by the Jaguars, players and staff were reportedly relieved. This bombshell report only validates their relief, and casts an even darker shadow over Urban Meyer and his legacy.
