USFL Football Player Cut From Team For Eating Pizza Instead of Salad

Pizza has come to be known as one of life’s havens, but in the case of the USFL, it can certainly divide.

Quite a bizarre story emerged from the newly-created United States Football League, which aims to take the popularity of football in America into the summer season. If the league were to fail, at least it would be remembered for the pizza incident.

The league released a documentary entitled “United by Football” which showcased the weeks leading up to the league’s debut, and a clip within the documentary went viral for showing Pittsburgh Maulers De’Veon Smith choosing to order a slice of pizza over a chicken salad. Needless to say, he was cut from the team for this.

The Maulers had claimed that Smith had intentionally violated three league rules within a 24-hour period, including disrespecting a cafeteria worker, and thus was cut from the team. Smith, however, denies these claims.

“I have a set of standards that we go by as a football team,” Maulers coach Kirby Wilson said of the incident. “Those standards weren’t met. That individual knew that we had a prior agreement that led to a later misunderstanding. Once those incidents were brought to my attention, I addressed them immediately.”

“None of these people are good enough actors for this to be fake,” ESPN radio commentator Peter Rosenberg said on The Michael Kay Show. “This has to be real.”

Regardless of whether or not the incident was justified, it seems to be exactly the type of drama and publicity the USFL needs if it is to become a serious professional sports league in this country.

What do you think of the USFL pizza incident? Was De’Veon Smith’s cutting from the team warranted? Let us know, by either leaving a reaction below or by sending us a tweet at @celebsecrets.
