2017 was THE year for Julia Michaels. The world was finally able to meet the lyrical genius behind Justin Bieber‘s “Sorry”, Selena Gomez‘s “Good For You,” and Hailee Steinfeld‘s “Love Myself” through her original music, which btw, is absolutely amazing.
Last November, the Recording Academy recognized Michaels’ talent and nominated her for two awards — “Best New Artist” and “Song of the Year” for “Issues” — at the 60th Annual GRAMMY Awards, airing on CBS later this evening. With no surprise, the 23-year-old was ecstatic when she heard the news, sharing this on her Instagram page:
“So what you’re telling me is.. DREAMS DO COME TRUE!!!!! What is today?!?! I’m still in absolute shock and feel like I’m walking on a million clouds! Thank you @recordingacademy for seeing me as an artist and not just as a songwriter. You have no idea what that means to me. If you need me today, I will be jumping on my bed and eating pizza!”
When we met up with Julia during the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Tour presented by Capital One in Miami last December, we HAD to ask her about the nominations and how rewarding it is for her music to be recognized (and loved) by some of the most powerful names in the music industry.
“It’s amazing. I had no idea that [2017] was going to turn out like this. To be acknowledged not only as a songwriter but also an artist by my peers is really amazing,” Julia said. “I am so honored.”
In addition, Michaels talked about how she starts the songwriting process and what she has planned for 2018.
Check out the full interview below and make sure to tune in to the 60th Annual GRAMMY Awards tonight @ 7:30PM ET/4:30PM PT on CBS to see if Julia wins an award!
