After spending 24 hours in labor, Gleyber Torres’ wife, Elizabeth, gave birth to the couple’s first child on Sunday, March 20, it was announced today (March 21).
As soon as the birth was over, Gleyber greeted his new son, Ethan. This marked quite a week for Torres, who signed a $6.25 million arbitration deal with the New York Yankees on Tuesday. Torres, who is currently in Florida with the team during Spring Training, spoke of the monumental event.
“Too many feelings; I feel like my life has changed,” Torres said. “It’s a lot of motivation to get better.”
It is indeed motivation to get better, both on and off the field, but when dealing with the birth of your first child, it may be hard to concentrate on the field. Torres learned this the hard way on Monday, the day after the birth, where he struggled throughout the game, including being tagged out in the sixth inning during an attempt to stretch an RBI single into a double.

“It’s hard. During the game, I was worrying about the baby, if everything is all right,” Torres said of his struggles. “I don’t know; it’s my first child. I’m just really happy. When I come to the ballpark, I’m trying to be focused, separate those moments and just pay attention for three hours in the game, [to] just be aware.”
“He’s a young man; hopefully we’re all maturing and growing, no matter where we are,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “The key for putting it in the context of a ballplayer is, you’ve got to learn from those things and grow from that. If you want to be great in this game, you’ve got to handle that adversity along the way. Becoming a father, that’s a monumental time in your life. Hopefully that’s a great thing for him and Elizabeth.”
Of course, these struggles are warranted, and even so, this is only a Spring Training exhibition game, which doesn’t count toward the regular season. Regardless, the birth of Ethan Torres begins a colossal chapter in Torres’ life, and we wish him and his family all the best.
