YDE on Why Debut Single “Stopped Buying Diamonds” is So Important for People to Hear

After two years of teasing, YDE has finally made her musical debut and it was so worth the wait.

The 17-year-old singer/songwriter and actress dropped her first-ever single “Stopped Buying Diamonds” back in October, and the alternative rock-infused track is the perfect anthem on what its like growing up as a member of Gen Z. Co-written with YDE’s mentor, superstar songwriter and activist, Justin Tranter, along with Grammy award-winning duo Mattman & Robin, the 17-year-old tells Celeb Secrets that sharing “Stopped Buying Diamonds” during this time felt so “right,” as it tackles the current social climate and the state the world is in today.

“I think the biggest thing I want people to take away [from ‘Stopped Buying Diamonds’] is the art of conversation. It’s such an interesting time right now — there’s a lot of polarity,” YDE says. “Everyone’s pointing fingers and blaming each other, and I think the biggest impact on my life is just having conversations and how powerful a singular conversation can be. I think it’s really important to just come to the table with an open heart and mind no matter what it’s about, and that’s what I want people to take away when they listen to the music.”

To accompany the song, YDE released a badass 80s-inspired music video, directed by Lior Molcho, with creative direction from Darian Darling. The video showcases the Aussie’s commanding stage presence as she portrays four fierce versions of herself and relays her story to an older (and much more critical) generation — YDE (on electric guitar, lead vocal) – the coolest girl in rock and roll high school, RUE (on acoustic guitar) – the teen rebel queen, LUX (on keytar) – the sweet sixteen vixen who’s hell on heels, and JAX (on drums) – the badass percussionist who’ll kick your ass on stage.

Celeb Secrets sits down (virtually) to chat with YDE about her debut single and the creative process behind it, why she chose now to release music, working with her mentor Justin Tranter and what’s to come from her in terms of new material. YDE’s second release, “BlindLife” drops this Friday, December 4th and you can presave the song on Spotify and Apple Music here.
