Zoë Kravitz to Make Directorial Debut with Film “P**y Island”

Zoë Kravitz is gearing up to make her directorial debut with the film, P**y Island.

According to Deadline, the story follows a young woman named Frida who works as a cocktail waitress in Los Angeles. Frida has her eyes set on a philanthropist and tech mogul named Slater King (played by Tatum). As she finds her way into King’s circle of friends, she lands an invitation to his private island. During her time on the island, she feels a looming sense of terror. There seems to be an unsettling presence beneath all the glitz and the glam.

In an interview with Deadline, Kravitz talked about the movie title, the writing process, and how she reached out to Tatum for the leading role.

On the title, the actress said it holds several meanings. Her interesting interactions with men in the industry ultimately inspired the name. She said, “The title was kind of a joke at first, this place where people would go, bring women, party and hang out. The story evolved into something else, but the title wound up having multiple meanings. And it alludes to this time and place we claim to not be in anymore, in terms of sexual politics.”

Kravitz starred in the Hulu show High Fidelity back in 2020. From the show, she said she gained a lot of writing and producing experience. She said it was “an incredible education in storytelling experience. This is my first feature and it’s taken many years to get to this point and I’m very excited to step into this new phase.”

From the get-go, the Big Little Lies star knew that she wanted Tatum to play the role of Slater King because of his previous work in Magic Mike. She had a feeling that he would be more than willing to explore the topics that the film would encompass. Since teaming up, the actors have worked on developing the script and characters together.

Tatum was initially surprised when Kravitz reached out to him because he didn’t personally know her. He said, “I’d watched her in movies, knew she produced High Fidelity and had seen that, but I didn’t know she was creating on a level like this, where she wanted to direct. This came out of nowhere and the subject matter made me say, wait, why are you thinking about me for this?”

Kravitz hopes to begin production on P**y Island early next year.
