Olivia Rodrigo & Gracie Abrams Get Real About Fame, ‘Brutal’ Teen Years, and Why Gracie is Ditching Dresses For Good

If you needed any more proof that Gracie Abrams and Olivia Rodrigo are the ultimate definition of friendship goals, Spotify just handed it to you on a silver platter.

Today (July 7), the streaming giant debuted the latest episode of its Countdown To vodcast series, and it features our favorite songwriting duo sitting down for a cozy, unfiltered chat. The episode comes just ten days before Gracie drops her highly anticipated new album, Daughter From Hell, out July 17.

Available on both Spotify and YouTube, the episode feels less like a formal interview and more like eavesdropping on a late-night FaceTime call between two best friends who happen to be Grammy-nominated pop stars. Together, Olivia and Gracie swap tour stories, discuss the upcoming album’s overarching themes, and get incredibly real about growing up in the spotlight.

While the entire episode is packed with gems, it’s Gracie’s refreshing take on the “fishbowl” feeling of modern fame that has us hitting repeat.

“On this album I referenced the strange fishbowl feeling… with the cameras, there’s so much that can be made to feel like it’s an emergency or it’s the biggest deal, or everyone is looking at you, everybody cares. In reality, that isn’t remotely true, and the world is so big,” Gracie said.

Gracie didn’t hold back when opening up about her emotional state prior to writing the record, admitting that she struggled with her self-esteem post-tour, bluntly stating, “I didn’t like myself.”

But Daughter From Hell marks a massive shift toward maturity, empathy, and existential reflection—even when looking back at her own family dynamics. Explaining the inspiration behind the album’s gritty title, Gracie admitted she was “brutal” to her parents growing up. “I think when you’re in a place where your relationships with your family are full of intense friction… you never think they’ll be different,” she shared, adding that the state of the world has made her fiercely protective of her time with loved ones.

And for those who loved Gracie’s signature tour dresses? Enjoy the memories, because they might be a thing of the past. The singer revealed that her changing style has brought her closer to her true identity.

“More than anything, I have found, as I’ve continued to cut my hair off, I feel more like myself,” Gracie told Olivia. “I look back on even the last tour aesthetic being in dresses, for example – I’m like, the person I am today, I don’t know that I will ever perform in a dress ever again.”

Consider us officially intrigued by this new era.
