Addison Rae is opening up about being in the spotlight and it’s not all that glamorous.
On the latest episode of her podcast That Was Fun? With Addison & Sheri, the 20-year-old spoke with music producer Benny Blanco about struggling with social media trolls while confirming that she will be covering Katy Perry‘s “Teenage Dream” in her upcoming Netflix film He’s All That.
For those who don’t know, Blanco is an award-winning music producer who worked with Addison on her debut single “Obsessed;” and is also the mastermind by some of your favorite hits including Perry’s “Teenage Dream.” When sitting down with Blanco for the interview, the TikTok star asked the artist to share the backstory behind the tune Addison will be covering in the upcoming film, and his story was insane to say the least.
“So basically here’s what happened. I had just come into LA and I like, had just stopped flying at the time cause I was like deathly afraid of flying. So I stopped flying. So I drove from New York to LA,” Blanco shares, with Addison responding, “Oh my God. How long did that take? Two days?”
“You can do it straight in 41 hours, but you know I like to have fun. We stopped everywhere. It’s incredible. So we got there and I was like so tired and I didn’t want to go to the studio and everyone was like, come on, just come to the studio. And I was like, ugh, I’m so tired. And I like got there and like studios give me anxiety, like big studios. Like even this I’m like, uh, I’m anxious. So, I was like set me up in the lounge. So I was in the lounge and I had like a little like laptop set up or something and we made like two beats in like 20 minutes. And like the two beats we made were ‘California Gurls’ and ‘Teenage Dream’,” he says.
“And I like played them for Katy. And she was like, eh, these are okay. And then we were like, okay. And then like, we eventually like started writing to it. We rewrote Teenage Dream seven times — the lyrics — we had the melodies. We rewrote the lyrics seven times over a week.”
Later in the podcast, Addison gets candid about how she struggles with social media trolls, and how people might judge her when the film is released.
“I’m just nervous. It’s like so weird being in this position because I feel like people just judge everything I do like 10 times harder. You know what I mean? Cause they’re like, ‘oh, you’re just a TikToker, so stay that way,’ Rae says.
When asked whether the comments ever get to her, Addison replied with the most genuine answer there is. While she tries her hardest to brush off the mean comments, she is human and sometimes contemplates deleting her social media accounts and stepping away from the spotlight to live a normal life.
“It got to me today actually. I was just like literally crying while you were in there. I was just reading so much stuff and it was like, really hard. No, actually. I was just reading comments on a post on Instagram and I’m like, oh my gosh, people are so ruthless. Like no one cares. Like they’re just like, Addison is just the worst, like most disgusting person I’ve ever…” she said.
“It’s a struggle, but I just like, I cry and then I remember like the good things about it. Cause then I think about it, like sometimes I’m like, oh, I just want to quit everything. Like I really do think that. And I’m like, I just want to stop. Like I just wanna delete all my social medias and like stop. If I deleted all my social media, I obviously could still like do music and stuff, but it’s like, that’s a part of it for me, you know?”
