Back in her ’90s heyday, Betsey Johnson famously gifted her runway looks to her models — think legends like Adriana Lima and Devon Aoki — rather than locking them away in a climate-controlled archive, meaning the original garment no longer existed in the brand’s physical inventory.
Enter Candice Cuoco, the independent designer and longtime Betsey Johnson collaborator, who teamed up with the brand’s design team and Betsey herself to pull off a sartorial miracle. Using nothing but original 1999 runway photography and fabric swatches, Cuoco reconstructed the outfit completely from scratch, hand-stitching layers of stretch lace for the capris and developing a custom-printed fabric for the bra directly from Betsey’s print library.
The custom build marks a major moment for Betsey Johnson’s Archival Revival 2026 initiative, which recreates lost runway holy grails for modern-day muses (recent “Betsey Babes” include Charli xcx, Rachel Sennott, and Paris Hilton). Better yet? The brand plans to launch a commercial Archival Revival collection in early 2027, meaning fans will soon be able to own a piece of the magic, too!
