The Philadelphia Eagles 2022-23 NFC Champion Team has now taken multiple hits in the coaching department. Jonathan Gannon, who led Philly’s defensive unit in a season in which they obtained the third most sacks in NFL history, is being hired as the next head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. This comes moments after the Colts hired Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen as their next head coach.
Cardinals are finalizing a deal with former Eagles’ defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon to become their new head coach, sources tell ESPN. The last HC opening of this hiring cycle is being filled.

The 40-year-old Gannon becomes a head coach after two successful seasons running the Eagles defense. That unit was one of the top in the league for both seasons under Gannon, and this past season’s defense was even better than the season before.
It’s interesting to see Gannon accept the job with the Cardinals, as Arizona’s open spot was not very much desired due to quarterback Kyler Murray’s current injury status and disorganization within the front office and ownership.
Gannon brings something entirely different to the table than previous Cardinals headman Kliff Kingsbury, as Kingsbury is an offensive specialist, and Gannon is a defensive specialist.

Another thing to monitor is how Gannon and Murray will get along after Kingsbury had multiple incidents involving him and the young QB arguing.
We shall see if Gannon will succeed with the Cardinals, or if this is just another example of “the grass isn’t always greener” – only time will tell.
