Besides knowing what comes within music, acting, and overall fame, Becky G and Anthony Ramos discovered they both faced the same challenges growing up.
While Ramos grew up in the projects of Brooklyn with his siblings and Becky G in Inglewood, they both know how tiring it is to constantly have to watch your back in their communities.
“I think there’s something special to growing up that way, not having a lot and really leaning on love,” said Ramos during the “Becky G & Anthony Ramos: Breaking the Mental Health Stigma” episode of Becky G’s new series Face to Face with Becky G on Facebook Watch.
They both acknowledged how draining it is to be in constant “flight or fight mode,” which is something the younger generation continues to face. It wasn’t until they grew older that they realized they entered an unknown world.
“I didn’t know what depression was,” Becky G said. “I didn’t know what any of those things were. And those are things that manifest when living in that fight or flight that a lot of our youth grows up in…”
Becky, like many of us, believes those that grew up in communities like theirs, deserve much more.
When being asked about machismo and the ways it hurts men, Ramos said, “…there’s this machismo kinda thing that we gotta have or that we learn that we need to have. You know, you gotta protect, you gotta be the man of the house, or whatever. But it’s, like, what even is that, you?”
Ramos leans into therapy and has learned the importance of patience.
Music was Becky G’s first form of therapy before she even knew what therapy was. She brings in the importance of knowing rehabilitation has different forms within it, although it wasn’t taught to her when she was younger.
“And for me, music was that thing as a kid,” said Becky G.
