All football fans have been waiting for tonight since the NFL schedule was announced on May 12th.
The defending Super Bowl champs, the Los Angeles Rams, will be hosting the early favorites out of the AFC, the Buffalo Bills. This is a matchup that some are calling a Super Bowl preview.
The Bills are led by fifth-year QB Josh Allen and the only defense in the league that allowed under five yards per play a season ago. While the Rams bring back most of their Super Bowl LVI winning team, including QB Matthew Stafford and the NFL’s number one wide receiver a season ago, Cooper Kupp, although missing a big key to that championship, midseason acquisition, pass rusher Von Miller who is now a member of the Rams opponent tonight, the Buffalo Bills.
Miller wasn’t the only significant addition for the Bills this offseason, as they also added former Titans Pro Bowl guard Rodger Saffold and veteran slot receiver Jamison Crowder who, along with Isaiah McKenzie, have big shoes to fill in the role of recently departed Cole Beasley who had such a great connection with Josh Allen. As for injury news, the Bills will be without Pro Bowl cornerback Tre’Davious White who was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list, which indicates he will miss at least the first four games of the season. Thus, the Bills will be looking for rookie cornerback Kaiir Elam to step up in his place. The 2019 All-Freshman SEC selection will have a challenging task in his first NFL game, but who better to show you belong against than the defending champions?
As for the Rams, other than losing Miller, the team also lost long-time team leader and current Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime contributor Andrew Whitworth. Whitworth was an essential part of the Rams vocally in the locker room and through his play as one of the most consistent left tackles in the NFL for several years.
In place of Whitworth, the team decided to re-sign his former backup, Joe Noteboom, and upgrade him to the starter level at the position. A few other noticeable moves for the Rams were the additions of former Seahawks Super Bowl Champion linebacker Bobby Wagner and Pro Bowl wideout Allen Robinson.
Wagner comes into Los Angeles with Super Bowl experience and being a leader on and off the field, which can go a long way for the team. Robinson comes into town as a “replacement” for Odell Beckham Jr., who is currently a free agent as he is still recovering from tearing his ACL in the Super Bowl. Robinson will be expected to step up huge in his first game with the team, especially with Van Jefferson being ruled out for tonight’s game.
As for some predictions for this game, I believe the Bills will beat the Rams by a score of 35-29; I also predict Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis will bring his hot finish to last season into the beginning of this season with two touchdowns tonight.
