With some struggles to stop the run and a season-ending injury to a critical piece of their defense, the Cleveland Browns traded a 2024 sixth-round pick to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for linebacker Deion Jones and a 2024 seventh-round pick. Jones’s tenure in Atlanta was good but did not have the storybook ending that both sides dreamed about. Jones will now be expected to impact the up-and-down Browns defense from day one.

The Browns are currently ranked as the number 28 run defense out of 32 teams which is not an ideal spot to be in and with the loss of starting middle linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. in their week three 29-17 victory over the Steelers, they couldn’t wait any longer if they wanted to improve immediately. Hence, they ended up taking a shot on a linebacker in Deion Jones, who came into the league out of LSU in 2016 and made an immediate impact in his first couple of seasons as a member of the Falcons; as time has gone on, the talent and awareness are still there but with some injuries, as well as much higher expectations due to the lack of talent surrounding him, Jones and the Falcons defense heavily went down in his last couple of seasons with the team.
As of Wednesday, October 12, Jones will be participating in his first practice as a member of the Cleveland Browns after being taken off of the Physically Unable to Perform list, which he had been placed on before the start of the season due to shoulder surgery. The hope for Cleveland is that Jones could return to the player we saw at the beginning of his career, including his dominant season during the Falcons Super Bowl run in the 2016-17 season.

We shall now wait and see if Jones could make the immediate impact that is necessary for Cleveland and also if he could inspire others around him to play better.
