Two of the greatest players in St. Louis Cardinals history, Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina, played their final games in the big leagues this past season. Speaking of Molina, the nine-time Gold Glove Award Winner was the Cardinals catcher for the entirety of his nineteen-year career. Hence, the Cardinals now decided to add another star catcher, Willson Contreras, to replace the retired Molina.
The deal with Contreras is for five years and is worth $87.5 million; Contreras has had a stellar career so far, as he has spent the first seven years of his career as a member of the Chicago Cubs. During his time in Chicago, Contreras won a World Series and was named an All-Star three times.
Contreras will undoubtedly add a lot of what Molina did throughout his career, as the two are very similar in terms of elite catching, elite leadership, and solid hitting but more consistency from Molina in that regard.
As for the Cardinals, this is a significant win for them as they replace their retired superstar catcher with a younger superstar catcher who has loads of experience, including playing at the highest level of the game in 2016 when Contreras won a World Series ring.
This could be a perfect marriage as each side matches equally with the other.
