Commanders Trade For Colts’ Quarterback Carson Wentz in Blockbuster Deal

The past twenty-four hours have certainly been filled with drama for the NFL – but in this case, that is a positive.

After Aaron Rodgers agreed to a record-breaking extension with the Packers, and Russell Wilson was traded from the Seahawks to the Broncos, it has now been confirmed that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz will be traded to the Washington Commanders.

As is the case with these types of deals, the Commanders will acquire a famed franchise quarterback in exchange for a few draft picks: the Commanders’ 2022 and 2023 third-round picks. This may not sound like much for the Colts, but given Wentz’s injury history, and the Colts’ increasing unhappiness with the quarterback, it is certainly warranted.

Wentz is arguably most famous for leading the Philadelphia Eagles to their first and so far only Super Bowl win in franchise history, when they beat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in 2018. Despite his successes in 2017 and ‘18, his injuries and declining performance led him to be sidelined to make way for rookie Jalen Hurts, and he was traded to the Colts in 2020.

But after setting career-lows with the Colts, including struggling in important games for the Colts down the stretch in 2021, including a game against the lowly 3-14 Jaguars which the team’s playoff aspirations lived or died on (they died), the Colts opted to ship him off. Wentz threw for 3,563 yards with 27 touchdowns, but seven interceptions with the team.

“I know I’m going to get a lot of questions about Carson right now. I don’t have a direct answer for you,” Colts GM Chris Ballard said about the trade. “[We] will sit down over the next 10 days and figure out where it’s going.” It is apparent that he could not comment on the trade at this time.
