Production on the Disney+ live-action adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s novel “Peter and Wendy” has finally started in Vancouver.
The film Peter Pan & Wendy is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2022. It was originally set to be a theatrical release along with Robert Zemecki’s Pinocchio, but Disney later moved them to its streaming service in hopes of boosting streaming numbers.
The live-action film will be led by Alexander Molony (The Reluctant Landlord) as Peter Pan and Ever Anderson (Black Widow) as Wendy, along with Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) as Captain Hook; Yara Shahidi (Grown-ish) as Tinkerbell; Molly Parker (House of Cards) as Mrs. Darling; Alan Tudyk (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) as Mr. Darling; newcomers Joshua Pickering as John; Jacobi Jupe as Michael and Alyssa Wapanatâhk as Tiger Lily; and Jim Gaffigan (The Jim Gaffigan Show) as Smee.
It’ll be directed by David Lowery and produced by Jim Whitaker, teaming up together once again after working on Disney’s Pete’s Dragon.
Based on and inspired by Barrie’s novel and Walt Disney’s animated film Peter Pan, the film will follow the classic story of a young girl, Wendy, defying her parents’ wishes to go to a boarding school, and instead travels with her two younger brothers to the magical Neverland. There, she meets a boy who refuses to grow up, a tiny pixie, and an evil pirate captain. They all soon find themselves on a dangerous yet thrilling adventure, far away from their family and their home.
“Peter Pan has long been one of my favorite stories, partially because I’ve always resisted growing up, but also because of the heart, adventure, and imagination that makes J.M. Barrie’s original tale so evergreen,” says Lowery. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to redefine his iconic characters for a new generation – and even more excited that I get to do so with such an exceptional cast and crew.”
This, of course, isn’t the first time that the classic novel has been turned into a live-action film but hopefully, it’ll follow in the footsteps of Disney’s other live-action efforts such as The Lion King and Aladdin.
