Elle Fanning Looks Unrecognizable in Hulu’s ‘The Girl From Plainville’ Trailer (Watch)

Elle Fanning looks unrecognizable as she brings Michelle Carter’s chilling true crime case to life on the small screens.

In the new trailer released on Tuesday (February 8) by Hulu, we see a tearful Michelle Carter (Fanning) as she reveals to her parents David (Kai Lennox) and Gail (Cara Buono) Carter that her boyfriend Conrad Roy III ‘Coco’ (Colton Ryan) is dead. The series will premiere on Hulu on March 29 for true crime fans to relive the thrilling case.

We then get a glimpse of what the film will be like after his suicide is discovered. Texts are revealed and led up to Michelle. This led to a deeper investigation into the actual cause of Roy’s death with Michelle becoming the prime suspect.

The cast also includes Chloë Sevigny as Conrad’s mother Lynn Roy, Ella Kennedy Davis as Sydney Roy, Jeff Wahlberg as his best friend Rob Mahoney, and Callie Brook McClincy as Carter’s younger sister Hayden.

Fanning shared her excitement and perspective towards her participation in the film.

“When this came along, I was excited to look at it from an unbiased perspective,” she said during the TCA 2022 Winter Press Tour. “I didn’t watch the cast, I didn’t necessarily follow it. I could sense the headlines and media was making it one thing.”

“What this show says about bullying… is how much easier it is for people to say things behind a screen. You can kind of create this world that isn’t real where you have no consequences for what you say,” she added.

True crime fans already know Conrad committed suicide in his truck seven years ago (2014) at a K-Mart parking lot in Massachusetts. Although Carter claimed she loved him, she knew his intentions and persuaded him into doing it in the series of texts and phone records found.

The investigation led to more fingers being pointed at Carter since she did nothing to prevent his death, but encouraged it. Roy’s mother Lynn filed a $4.2 million wrongful death lawsuit against Carter. In 2017, she told CBS News her reckless conduct caused Roy to suffer “severe personal injuries, great conscious pain and suffering of body and mind and ultimately death.”

That same year, the civil suit won against Carter and she was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for involuntary manslaughter with 15 months and five years of probation but she remained free till her state appeals were completed.

Eric Goldman, attorney and one of the representatives of Roy’s family told MassLive the family was not doing it for the money, but for Conrad’s memorial. Goldman continued with, “the family would obviously rather have their son back.”

According to Buzzfeed News, she began her prison sentence in February 2019 since her conviction was overturned by Massachusetts’ highest court and she was denied parole in September after seeking an early release from prison.

Carter was once again a free woman on January 23, 2020, after her release from the women’s center at the Bristol County House of Corrections where she served 11-months from her initial 15-month prison sentence.
