If you have plans for 9pm ET tonight, cancel them. Trust me, you’ll thank me later.
Why? Because Empire Season 2 is BACK and it premieres TONIGHT!
This show follows Lucious Lyon, the CEO of Empire Records, on a quest to name an heir for the company after being diagnosed with ALS. He is told he only has a few years to live, so he pits his three sons against each other in the battle for their futures.
Matters get a little trickier when his ex-wife, Cookie, storms back into the scene after taking the fall for Lucious seventeen years ago.
Since the very first episode, fans have discovered some amazing music, cried over tragic deaths, watched a young man come out of the closet and witnessed Lucious Lyon behind bars. That’s not even the half of it.
Sounds amazing right?
Well, if I haven’t convinced you yet, here are 5 reasons why you should tune in tonight for the season 2 premiere:
Reason Number One: COOKIE LYON
Taraji P. Henson is absolutely brilliant. I have yet to find a person who doesn’t worship the character of Cookie. She’s strong, sassy and sexy. Plus, you can’t go the rest of your life without hearing one of her one-liners or seeing her rock a fur coat. She simply makes the show.
Reason Number Two: THE MUSIC
Warning: You WILL wake up the next day with the songs stuck in your head.
Now, normally, you would find me rocking out to country music. I do not venture far from my beloved country twang. However, there’s just something about the music in Empire that has me pressing replay over and over again. The songs are just so catchy! Even my mom sings along, which is slightly uncomfortable, but also amazing. After one episode, you’ll have the whole album downloaded and on repeat.
Reason Number Three: THE GUEST STARS
Last season, Courtney Love, Raven Symoné, Snoop Dogg, Naomi Campbell, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Jennifer Hudson and more made appearances on the show. This season there are going to be even MORE familiar faces. Kelly Rowland, Chris Rock, Marisa Tomei and others have already confirmed they will be starring on the show. This cast is absolutely incredible and, based off of last season, we can expect some amazing storylines from these famous guest stars.
Reason Number Four: THE SHOWDOWNS
Where do I even begin? Between Hakeem, Jamal and Andre battling for the empire, you’d think there wouldn’t be enough fighting left for anyone else, but au contraire, my friends. Expect to see some more catfights between Cookie and BooBooKitty and Lucious and his entire family. Each character will stop at nothing to get what they want, and if they have to walk all over someone else to get to the top, they will.
Reason Number Five: THE REAL WORLD ISSUES
Yes, Empire is all about the drama, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn a thing or two along the way. At the core of it’s histrionic plot lines are people dealing with very painful realities. Lucious is coming to terms with his ALS diagnosis while the eldest son, Andre, suffers from bipolar disorder. Jamal is worried about how his sexual orientation will affect his career and how it will affect his relationship with his homophobic father. Hakeem is trying to change the music industry and they’re all fighting to prove that they can come from nothing and make something of themselves.
See what I mean? This show is not afraid to push boundaries and I can only imagine what season 2 will bring.
Watch the show. It’ll be your new favorite obsession.
