In honor of the 10th anniversary of the late Naya Rivera‘s Glee character, Santana Lopez’s coming out as lesbian, the GLAAD Media Awards will be showing a special tribute for the beloved character.
In addition to the special tribute, the entire cast of Glee (Jacob Artist, Chris Colfer, Darren Criss, Vanessa Lengies, Jane Lynch, Kevin McHale, Heather Morris, Matthew Morrison, Alex Newell, Amber Riley, Harry Shum Jr., Becca Tobin, and Jenna Ushkowitz) will reunite and attend the virtual ceremony honoring Rivera and Santana. Demi Lovato, who was a recurring actress on the show as Santana’s love interest, will be presenting the cast and the special tribute.
Rivera, who we tragically lost last July, played one of the first queer Latinx roles portrayed in the media. Santana’s character and her character development helped fans come to terms and be comfortable with their sexuality. She represented many things for many people and was one of the most iconic characters on the show.
GLAAD is honoring Rivera and her character, Santana, on the ten-year anniversary the episode of her coming out was released for the impact she has made on LGBTQ+ teens and Latinx LGBTQ+ representation on television. During its run, Glee was nominated six times for Outstanding Comedy Series at the GLAAD Media Awards, winning the award in both 2010 and 2011.
You can catch the GLAAD Media Awards exclusively on GLAAD’s YouTube channel on Thursday, April 8th, at 8 PM ET.
