Jenna Dewan Opens Up About Working with Fiancé Steve Kazee on “The Rookie” (Exclusive)

Jenna Dewan is bringing the heat to The Rookie Season 7.

The multi-talented actress, dancer, and all-around queen is back on our screens as firefighter Bailey Nune, and this season is shaping up to be her most exciting yet. But wait — there’s more. Jenna’s real-life fiancé, Steve Kazee, is back on the show, and let’s just say that’s its a moment you won’t want to miss.

Kazee plays Jason Wyler, Bailey’s estranged and abusive husband, whose shocking return shakes up her life in unimaginable ways. Initially presumed out of the picture, Jason re-emerges with sinister intentions, threatening Bailey’s newfound happiness with Nolan. His presence forces Bailey to confront her traumatic past while proving her resilience as she fights for her future. Kazee’s portrayal of Jason is chilling, adding an intense and emotional layer to the show’s gripping narrative. His return not only impacts Bailey but also puts Nolan in a difficult position, testing their relationship in unexpected ways.

During Celeb Secrets’ exclusive interview with Jenna at the LA Art Show’s Opening Night Premiere Party in Los Angeles on Wednesday (February 19), the 44-year-old spilled all the tea about working with Steve, revealing that their first scene together was a moment to remember.

“We had a lot of fun,” Jenna gushed. “Our very first scene we did together, we actually yelled cut, looked at each other and were like, ‘Whoa!’ Thank God we act well together. Cause you just never know… it could go well, it could not go well.” Lucky for us, it went very well, and she even teased that Steve’s role was “scary in the best ways.”

Jenna also opened up about their dynamic on set, saying that working with someone she loves made the experience feel even more natural and effortless. “I do think when you work with someone you love, you immediately drop the walls and you’re able to go for it faster,” she shared. “And you feel safer to go for it cause, you know. You’re going home, and you’re gonna have your kids, and have your life, and it’s gonna be really fun.”

JENNA DEWAN

For those who need a refresher, The Rookie follows John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), the LAPD’s oldest rookie-turned-training officer, as he navigates the challenges of law enforcement. Jenna’s character, Bailey, entered the series as a fearless firefighter and has since become a fan favorite — especially with her on-screen romance with Nolan. With fresh drama, high-stakes rescues, and plenty of heart-pounding action on the horizon, we can’t wait to see what Bailey is up to next.

For season 7, Nolan has used his life experience, determination and sense of humor to keep up with rookies 20 years his junior. Now recovering from a gunshot wound and feeling the effects of his age, John and the team welcome two new rookies and continue the hunt for two dangerous escaped prisoners who have very personal vendettas. In tonight’s episode titled “Wildfire,” Nyla (Mekia Cox) remains suspicious of Liam Glasser as a wildfire erupts, causing chaos in the city. Meanwhile, James tries to help a friend, and Seth makes a costly mistake, putting two of their own in danger.

STEVE KAZEE

Beyond their on-screen drama, Jenna and Steve’s real-life love story is nothing short of a fairytale. The couple first sparked romance rumors in late 2018, following Jenna’s split from Channing Tatum. Their relationship blossomed quickly, and in 2019, they announced they were expecting their first child together. In March 2020, they welcomed their son, Callum, and later that year, Steve popped the question with a stunning engagement ring. Since then, they’ve been balancing parenthood, careers, and now, their on-screen collaboration on The Rookie.

But let’s not forget the most important detail: Jenna also let us in on a hilarious “celeb secret” about her and Steve that’s giving total opposites-attract energy. Turns out, their nightstands are a perfect metaphor for their personalities.

“He is like, I mean, it’s like color coordinated, it’s lined up, there’s not a corner out of place, and I’m as if something, like, a crystal, exploded with essential oils,” Jenna laughed. “I’m a mess.”

Honestly, same, Jenna.

So, what’s next for The Rookie? Expect intense cases, emotional twists, and, of course, plenty of Bailey moments that’ll have us glued to our screens. Make sure to tune in to ABC every Tuesday at 9/8c on ABC for new episodes as they’re bound to be iconic.
