On September 18, 2022, the Las Vegas Aces, led by first-year head coach Becky Hammon defeated the Connecticut Sun 78-71 in game five of the 2022 WNBA Finals to capture their first championship in franchise history. The “Sin City” located Aces took the women’s basketball world by storm in their first season with the former Spurs assistant at the helm.
This title-clinching game for the Aces was very close throughout as the Sun fought until the end. Still, ultimately, the Aces did what they had to do to seal the deal, led by former Duke star Chelsea Gray who finished the game with 20 points to go along with five rebounds, six assists, and a block and a steal. This is not the first time Gray has won a championship, as she won her first one in 2016 when she was a member of the LA Sparks. The difference this time compared to last for Gray is that this time she won the WNBA Finals MVP Award due to her stellar play on the hardwood.

As for Hammon, she has officially made a statement as being arguably the top coach in the league in her first season as a head coach. Hammon had spent several seasons in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs as part of Gregg Popovich’s staff. Indeed the knowledge and experienced gain from that experience translated into Hammon’s first season as a head coach, as she is officially a championship-winning coach.
