Lauren Spencer-Smith Proves Being Raw and Vulnerable Leads to Huge Success

Don’t take Lauren Spencer-Smith “For Granted” because she’ll turn around and write a number one song about you.

The 18-year-old is known for holding nothing back. When it comes to songwriting, she puts it all out there, sharing a specificity that few artists do.

“I probably give every detail,” Spencer-Smith told Celeb Secrets reporter Blakely McHugh backstage at the iHeartRadio KIIS FM Wango Tango in Los Angeles earlier this month. “Like when we’re writing about a person, I’m like, ‘this is what they look like, here are all the details’ and we just put them all in.”

Lauren’s been releasing music since 2019, but it wasn’t until last November when her song “Fingers Crossed” blew up on TikTok that she saw her first major breakthrough.

That breakthrough? Half a billion views on the social media app.

“I took the video, not for TikTok but to just remember what the song sounded like because I liked it so much in the session. [Then] I uploaded it and I was like ‘uh oh.’”

Uh oh is right, because the song was blowing up on TikTok and it wasn’t even finished yet. The Island Records recording artist said while the song was completely written, the production of the song wasn’t done and she didn’t have a demo.

“I messaged the producer like, ‘hey okay, when do you think this is going to be done? It has a bunch of views, we really need to get it out on the Internet.’”

Spencer-Smith was working on a number of songs at the time that “Fingers Crossed” went viral on the Internet. But she knew this one had to be the next release or else the fans would “murder [her].”

So two months later, her team released the full version of the track. Since then, it’s gained more than 250 million global streams, hit the Top 10 at Top 40 Radio, and earned acclaim from music critics at respected outlets.

“My life is just completely different. I swear I didn’t even really have a house, I was just living with my best friend because my family living situation was not cool,” she said about how much her life has changed since last year. “Now I have an apartment and I’m looking at houses and it’s just insane.”

The singer/songwriter is also hitting the road, headlining shows and selling them out. In fact, fans sold out her debut show in New York City at The Bowery on June 28.

On top of her performances, she’s preparing to release a new album by dropping a series of singles this year.

Fans can expect a lot of “upbeat pop stuff” which is a bit of a deviation from her most recent work. She says that’s exactly what makes her most excited about the new project.

“I feel like people haven’t heard [that genre] from me necessarily so I’m kind of excited about the up beat ones.”

In April, she released another smash hit, “Flowers.” Both of her hit songs are based off of a previous relationship in which she realizes she wasn’t being treated the way that she should have been.

The tracks are clearly resonating with people, considering her latest single is her second biggest hit with over 59 million streams on Spotify alone.

So when can we expect the new album?

“My album is almost done. We don’t have a date yet but this year.”
