The 2023-2024 NFL season will officially be underway tonight (September 7) as the Detroit Lions head into Arrowhead Field to face off against the reigning Super Bowl Champs, the Kansas City Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes has yet to lose an opening night, but the Chiefs may be without his top weapon in superstar tight end Travis Kelce. The Lions will look to show the world that they are ready to compete with the best of the best.

These two teams are trendy in terms of expectations, as the Chiefs have won three AFC Championship titles and two Super Bowl trophies since 2019, and the Lions were one of the most improved teams in the league a season ago. Arguably, the two most consistent factors within this run of success for the Chiefs are still the main pieces of this current team, as head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes still lead the way in KC. However, some integral parts of the puzzle may miss some actions as tight end Travis Kelce’s game status is up in the air due to a knee injury he suffered at practice during the week; the one standout who is not playing in tonight’s season-opening contest is the team’s defensive tackle superstar Chris Jones as he is currently holding out for a new contract. With that said, another constant on the defensive side of the ball is defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who has done a tremendous job throughout his stint with Reid and the Chiefs, so he will no doubt have this championship-caliber defensive unit ready to go for their week one matchup even without arguably their best player on that side of the ball.
As for Detroit, the Dan Campbell-led squad is looking to clinch a playoff berth for the first time in several years and are currently in the top five in betting odds of teams to win the NFC Championship. Some key standouts to check out on this Lions roster include some newcomers and a couple of familiar faces as Detroit added multiple running backs in long-time Bears starter David Montgomery and rookie tailback Jahmyr Gibbs, who they selected with the twelfth-overall pick in this year’s draft, along with adding one of the best safeties in the league in former Eagles standout Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. These three additions will all be critical ingredients in this season’s success for the Lions. As for returning members who must step up hugely, young star wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown and young pass-rushing phenom Aidan Hutchinson are projected to have big seasons for the Motor City’s football squad.

As for predictions, we believe the defending champs will be victorious over the Lions by a score of 38-31.
