The Dallas Mavericks have made a trade that will bring eight-time All-Star Kyrie Irving to Dallas. The Mavericks acquired Irving and veteran forward Markieff Morris from the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, a first-round pick, and two second-round picks. Irving will now be paired up with four-time All-Star Luka Doncic.
Adding a player like Irving is the perfect example of a high-risk-high-reward situation for the Mavs; Irving is one of the most controversial figures in the basketball world due to his off-court antics but is also one of the greatest players to play the game of basketball. The thought of a backcourt containing Irving and Doncic is mind-blowing, as both of these individuals are just elite talents that are rare to find.Since coming into the league in 2018, Doncic has been arguably the best player in the game, not just through stats but also through impacting his teammates positively on the court. Doncic led the Mavs to a Western Conference Finals berth a season ago, but Dallas was eliminated in five games by the eventual champions, the Golden State Warriors. The Mavericks have faced much criticism over Doncic’s young career due to their inability to bring high-level players to put around Doncic.
With that said, if this trade works out fantastically, the Mavericks may be able to build something extraordinary for years to come as a nucleus of Doncic, and a focused Irving can lead the franchise to be a contender year in and year out.

Since requesting to be traded from Brooklyn on Friday, Irving was thought to be headed to the Los Angeles Lakers to reunite with ex-teammate LeBron James; some reports have indicated that Nets owner Joe Tsai was unwilling to trade Irving to Los Angeles, with other reports indicating that the Lakers would only offer Irving a two-year extension, rather than the four-year max extension that he is looking for.
Speaking of free agency, a big story will be whether or not Irving will be committed to signing a contract extension with the Mavericks following the season. The same goes for Dallas’ willingness to offer Irving such a rich deal. The answer will be determined by the results of Irving’s time in Dallas for the remainder of the season.
