Mark McMorris Reflects on Being the Most Decorated Winter Athlete in X Games History After Silver Medal Finish in Snowboard Slopestyle at X Games Aspen 2025 (Exclusive)

When Mark McMorris first dropped into an X Games course in 2011, he never imagined he’d still be riding at the highest level over a decade later; let alone making history as the most decorated winter athlete in X Games history.

But on Saturday (January 25) the 31-year-old Canadian snowboarder did just that, earning his 24th career medal with a silver in Pacifico Men’s Snowboard Slopestyle at X Games Aspen 2025.

McMorris’ latest hardware adds another milestone to an already legendary career. Competing against a new generation of riders — many nearly a decade younger — he proved once again why he remains a force in the sport. Despite tough flat-light conditions, McMorris delivered a high-scoring run packed with his signature smooth style and technical mastery, landing clean on every feature. His consistency, honed over years of elite competition, secured him second place on the podium, just behind his close friend and defending gold medalist, Red Gerard.

“Every time I get another one, I’m like, wow, I can’t believe I got another one,” McMorris told Celeb Secrets after the competition. “But this time, I’m like, actually, I can’t believe I got another one, because I don’t think there’s a kid in this field that’s not at least 10 years younger than me. It’s kind of insane that I’m still riding at this level. But I love it, and I still have fun doing it.”

The Slopestyle contest featured a stacked field of 10 world-class riders throwing down their best in a high-pressure, high-stakes showdown. Red Gerard, who was dialed in from the start, delivered an electric final run that sealed his back-to-back gold medal win. His switch backside triple cork 1620 mute in the final moments had the Buttermilk crowd roaring and ultimately edged him past McMorris for the top spot.

Afterward, Gerard made sure to acknowledge the impact McMorris has had on him and the sport. “I’ve looked up to Mark forever,” Gerard told Celeb Secrets earlier in the weekend. “The way he’s been able to dominate for so long and still be out here riding at the highest level is just insane. He’s a legend.”

McMorris reciprocated the respect, emphasizing how much he still thrives on competition and the camaraderie among riders. “Competing keeps me in tip-top condition. It pushes my riding the most and puts me in those do-or-die scenarios,” he said. “There’s going to be a lot of my life that isn’t in those situations, so I’m just trying to embrace it now.”

With 24 X Games medals to his name, McMorris has officially cemented his legacy as one of the greatest snowboarders in history. From his first gold in 2012 to this latest silver, his journey has been defined by resilience, evolution, and an unwavering love for the sport. Even after setbacks — whether injuries, competition struggles, or the rise of younger talent — McMorris continues to push boundaries and inspire generations of riders.

“When I first dreamt of coming to X Games, I just wanted to be a participant,” he reflected. “That would have been the highest of highs. To now have the most medals out of any winter athlete? That’s insane. 24 medals. It’s pretty bizarre.”

McMorris’ season is far from over. He has his sights set on upcoming World Cups, the World Championships in St. Moritz, and Natural Selection, a backcountry competition that aligns with his growing passion for powder riding. He’s also working on a new film project with Burton and Red Bull, set to drop next fall.

But for now, he’s soaking in another unforgettable moment at X Games Aspen — one that solidifies his name in the record books while reminding everyone why he’s still one of the best to ever do it. And knowing McMorris, this probably won’t be the last time he adds to that medal count.
