Miami Dolphins Add Elite Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio

Mike McDaniel and the Miami Dolphins have added a tremendous coach to their staff by hiring Vic Fangio as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Fangio has had a remarkable career of calling defenses, including coaching some very elite Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers defenses. He also has experience as a head coach when he was with the Broncos and coached newly-acquired Dolphins pass rusher, Bradley Chubb.

Fangio comes into Miami after taking a short break from coaching after being relieved of head coaching duties by the Broncos in 2021. He’s has been a football coach since 1979, and his career has gone from high school to the pros as the 2023-24 season will be his 37th season as an NFL coach.

The experience, along with success throughout his career, will be a massive asset for the Miami Dolphins. Fangio has been part of putting together some of the most elite defenses in recent memory as he was the architect and leader of the 49ers defense when they made their run to the Super Bowl in 2013.

Following his time in San Fran, Fangio joined the Chicago Bears as their DC from 2015-2018 and turned that unit into arguably the most consistent in football throughout that time.

Fangio, who turns 65 in August, will now be heading down to Miami Gardens to lead a defense that is full of talent in different aspects, such as the defensive line, which contains Christian Wilkins and Zach Seiler, as well as the pass-rushing room that includes Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb followed by a tremendous secondary that includes Jevon Holland, Kader Kohou, Xavien Howard, and Brandon Jones. Fangio will surely have fun finding ways to motivate these guys to reach another level.

Dolphins fans have already been highly anticipating next season after an awe-inspiring first year for McDaniel and co; with that said, with the addition of Fangio, fans are more excited than ever to see what their team does next season.

All in all, this is a terrific hire for Miami, a great move by Fangio to join an up-and-coming defense that is only a few solid tweaks away from being elite, and also speaks volumes about the respect Mike McDaniel has earned around the league after just his first year of being a head coach.
