On Thursday morning (June 10), Netflix surprisingly released the first teaser trailer for the film adaptation of tick, tick…BOOM!
Academy Award nominee Andrew Garfield stars in the lead role as Jonathan Larson, playwright and composer of the musical Rent! The autobiographical musical follows the early life of Larson as an aspiring composer who works as a waiter in a diner in New York City.
While he writes his next musical, he is met with personal challenges involving his girlfriend Susan (played by Alexandra Shipp) and his friend Michael (played by Robin de Jesús). As he deals with the many obstacles that life throws at him, he ponders the ultimate question: What are we meant to do with the time we have?
The cast also includes notable actors Vanessa Hudgens (Karessa), Joshua Henry (Roger), Mj Rodriguez (Carolyn), Tariq Trotter (H.A.W.K. Smooth), Judith Light (Rosa Stevens), and Bradley Whitford (Stephen Sondheim).
The film will be the directorial debut for Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of Hamilton. At the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of In the Heights on Wednesday (June 9), Miranda talked about tick, tick…BOOM! and Garfield’s performance during a red carpet interview with Variety.
He said, “Andrew is brilliant in this movie. You’re gonna get to see a bit of the movie sooner than you think, very soon in fact. I’m so proud of his performance. I’m so grateful that we were able to finish it in the impossible year that was last year. I’m editing, I’m still editing. As soon as I leave here, I got notes!”

Earlier in May, Garfield also had wonderful things to say about working with Miranda in an interview with Jimmy Fallon.
He said, “You know Lin! He’s like this crazy mixture of the most precocious eight year-old like genius, student of life. He won’t stop talking and has a reference for everything. And simultaneously…he’s maybe one of the ultimate creative geniuses of our time.” He continues, “I love him. To get to work with him on this was a privilege.”
tick, tick…BOOM! debuts in select theaters and on Netflix this fall.
