Amidst the San Francisco 49ers quarterback injury debacle in the 2023 NFC Championship Game, the NFL has added a rule allowing each team to have three active quarterbacks on game day. This will significantly prevent another QB injury carousel from affecting a team in such a game of significance as was the situation with the Niners in their 31-7 NFC title game loss to the Eagles due to Brock Purdy and Josh Johnson suffering injuries.
With that said, there are specific requirements within the rule that were not known initially, including the fact that the third quarterback is solely allowed to take the field if the first two quarterbacks are unable to play due to injury; this requirement specifically states that a team cannot enter their QB3 due to lack of production from the other quarterbacks on the active roster. Therefore, it will be fascinating to see how many games this new rule affects.

As for what occurred last season in the NFC title game for the Niners, Purdy first exited the contest with a shoulder injury, followed by Josh Johnson being ruled out with a concussion; Johnson’s concussion led to the Niners putting superstar tailback Christian McCaffrey under center for a few snaps but ultimately decided to put the injured Purdy back into the game and thus leading to only running the ball due to his inability to throw because of the injury he had suffered in the game.

All in all, this new rule should be celebrated by fans around the National Football League regardless of what team you cheer for; injuries are certainly the worst part of the game, so this will allow teams to stay competitive in case of emergency.
