The ice shined bright in Vegas last night as the city hosted its first NHL All-Star Game this weekend.
The 2022 NHL All-Star Game was played at T-Mobile Arena, home to the Las Vegas Golden Knights hockey team. The event itself was quite a spectacle, as the league’s most skilled players took to the ice in front of a sellout crowd of nearly 17,500 people to battle each other in a 3-on-3 bracket.
The league’s four divisions battled against each other to see who would prevail and take home a prize of $1 million, split between eleven players of the winning division. After the Metropolitan Division beat the Pacific Division by a score of 6-4, and the Central beat the Atlantic 8-5, the Metropolitan went on to defeat the Central by a score of 5-3, securing the prize money for All-Stars such as Sebastian Aho and Chris Kreider.
Philadelphia Flyers captain and star forward Claude Giroux was named the 2022 All-Star MVP. Giroux, who has played in seven All-Star games in his career, told reporters he was proud to win the award as a Flyer. “It’s been an honor to put that jersey on. It’s been a lot of fun, and any time you get to represent them it’s definitely an honor.”
In honor of being named MVP, Giroux was also awarded a Honda Passport, as the 2022 NHL All-Star Game was officially sponsored by Honda. When asked about what he will do with the new SUV, Giroux said he wasn’t yet sure.
The All-Star Game was not all hockey, though, believe it or not. The game also featured a performance during the second intermission by Machine Gun Kelly, who performed a few of his hit songs such as “My Ex’s Best Friend” and “Bloody Valentine.” Kelly, fully donned in a silver sequin suit, was also spotted sitting next to fiancée Megan Fox during the game, to much fanfare.
2022 was the first time in two years that the NHL held an All-Star Weekend, with the last being January 25, 2020 in St. Louis, as the 2021 All-Star Weekend was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the league.
The 2022 All-Star Game featured seventeen Canadian-born players and sixteen American-born players, both the most of any prior All-Star Game.
The event capped off the NHL’s All-Star Weekend, which also featured the Skills Competition occurring on the previous night. That event featured players taking the ice to perform unique tricks and skills, with a little Vegas flair.
