The National League East was one of the best divisions in the MLB a season ago, as three out of five teams made the playoffs; the Phillies, Braves, and Mets.
With that said, the division is set to stay competitive as the Phillies acquired superstar shortstop Trea Turner and the Mets acquired reigning AL Cy Young Award Winner and one of the best pitchers in the history of the game, Justin Verlander.

The Phillies added Turner after winning the National League last season and being so close to capturing a World Series title; Turner is coming off a season with the Dodgers in which he hit 21 home runs and racked up 100 RBI’s and was named an all-star for the second time in his career.
Turner’s contract is worth $300 million for eleven years. This is the type of move that all teams should make when they are so close to winning a championship. The Phillies have now sent a message to the league that they are nowhere near satisfied and want to win it all in 2023. Turner is now reunited with his former Nationals teammate Bryce Harper.

As for the Mets, adding Verlander to a cast that already includes another all-time great in Max Scherzer improves their chances of competing for a championship. At 39, Verlander is coming off an 18-win season in which he won his second World Series title and his third Cy Young award.
Verlander’s contract is for two years and is worth $86 million. The veteran right-hander has shown no signs of stopping, regardless of age, and will look to help bring a title to the Mets faithful. Something of note, Verlander, and Scherzer were previously teammates in Detroit as members of the Tigers for several years.

All in all, the Phillies and Mets have done and will continue to do everything they can to improve their chances of winning championships, and their fans should be ecstatic to have a team that wants to win because not all teams are run with winning as their primary goal.
