Paul George Expected To Miss Remainder Of Regular Season With Knee Injury

Los Angeles Clippers forward Paul George will miss at least the next two weeks with a sprained right knee, the team announced on Wednesday (March 22).

With the Clippers’ regular season concluding on April 9, the injury will likely sideline George until the playoffs. He will be reevaluated in two to three weeks, and his timeline for a possible return will be clearer once he is reevaluated, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

George suffered the injury in the Clippers’ 100-101 loss to the Thunder on Tuesday when his leg collided with Oklahoma City guard Lu Dort’s leg while both went up for a rebound late in the fourth quarter. George landed awkwardly and immediately collapsed to the ground, staying down for several minutes before needing to be helped off the court.

Before he went down, George put up 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals, but the Clippers could not close out the win in his absence. They won five of their last six games before the loss to OKC and currently sit fifth in the Western Conference, just 1.5 games above the play-in.

George, an eight-time All-Star, is averaging 23.8 points per game this season and threw down a couple highlight dunks earlier in Tuesday’s game. He has already dealt with a leg injury before, suffering a gruesome tibia-fibula fracture to his lower right leg during a U.S. national team intrasquad scrimmage in August of 2014.

Without George, the Clippers may struggle to keep their playoff spot over the final nine games of the regular season. They added some pieces at the trade deadline in February — acquiring Russell Westbrook, Mason Plumlee and Eric Gordon among others — but will most likely need a healthy Kawhi Leonard and George if they want to compete for a championship.
