Pixar has released the first teaser trailer for their next original feature, Turning Red!
In the trailer, we are introduced to a young 13-year-old girl named Mei Mei. As she prepares to take a practice test on quadratic equations, she is met with a note from one of her classmates. After she reads the note, her expression quickly changes from puzzled to horrified. The nightmarish note reads, “Your mom is outside.” She slowly turns around and spots her mother, Ming, spying on her from behind a tree.
Mei Mei begins to panic out of embarrassment and says to herself, “No! No! No! This isn’t happening.” In the midst of her panic attack, Ming can be seen fighting with a security guard and yelling at Mei Mei to tell them that she’s her mother. As her classmates watch the scene unfold, an explosion of pink smoke emerges and a giant, roaring red panda appears. We find out that Mei Mei “poofs” into a giant red panda when she feels overwhelmed.
Directed by Domee Shi, who is best known for her Oscar-winning animated short film, Bao, the film’s voice cast features newcomer Rosalie Chiang as Mei Mei and Golden Globe award-winning actress Sandra Oh as Ming. Earlier today (July 13), Oh posted the trailer to Instagram stating that she is “sooooo excited for this.”
